From Adventures in Odyssey to Compassion International

th I have officially taken a new role with Compassion International and am very excited about this new journey. I am sad to be leaving Focus on the Family and my beloved Adventures in Odyssey, but after a lot of prayer and conversations with my family and trusted friends, Ashley and I know this to be the right choice for our family’s future. Yes, I love Adventures in Odyssey and my role as Odyssey Adventure Club producer has been a blessing, a dream job for sure. Focus on the Family and Adventures in Odyssey have given me so much, and I have met and worked with many amazing people. But the truth is, my family and our future as a family is always the focus of the decisions Ashley and I make, and this new role allows our family to have a lifestyle we’ve been wanting. I will be a Regional employee so I work from home, we can live anywhere in the US we want to (No COS friends we aren’t leaving), or work from anywhere in the US for extended periods of time. There will be travel that we can do as a family, and we look forward to this new chapter in our life.Odyssey_Adventure_Club_LOGO_CMYK We often have to look back to see the amazing things God did or is doing in our lives or how He has been preparing us for something all along, this job is that sort of story. And in ways beyond my expectation he’s been confirming the decision was the right one. I’ve needed this, because I have been having a hard time of letting go (No I’m not breaking into a Disney song). Who wouldn’t have a hard time, being the OAC producer is an amazing job, an amazing opportunity. But I always try taking control, putting everything within my hands to craft what I want. I learned this last fall when it came to giving, and giving willingly and freely, that everything is better when you trust God and remain obedient to Him. So yes I am leaving an awesome job, but I feel strongly that God is taking our family to something greater. His plans are always better than ours.

Interview with Nancy I. Sanders

1 Book 10 cover 8925608_origWe recently had the pleasure of interviewing Nancy Sanders, author of the latest Imagination Station Book, Challenge on the Hill of Fire. I got the opportunity to have lunch with Nancy and her husband Jeff while they were out here, what a very cool couple they are! And it turns out Jeff really likes The Quest for Truth.

Q: Everyone seems to have a “how I got published” story. What is yours?

When I started out, I knew nothing about writing. I didn’t know how to format manuscripts or submit to publishers. I think one of the first manuscripts I ever submitted was handwritten in red pen on lined notebook paper and I mailed it to one of my favorite authors, asking them to publish it. Imagine! That’s how little I knew about the business of writing.

So if I can experience success as a writer and learn the skills of writing and learn about the business of getting published, anyone can!

Q: When did you realize you wanted to become a writer?

After our two sons, Dan and Ben, were born, I loved reading children’s books to them. I started thinking, “I could write one of these!” So I tried it and fell in love with writing children’s books. About a year later, I felt that God was calling me to be His scribe. So I started taking writing seriously as my purpose in life.

Q: Tell me a little about your books.

I’ve had over 80 books published by publishers big and small. Some have won big awards. Some haven’t won any awards at all. Some have made lots and lots of money (enough to help buy our house). Some haven’t made any money at all. Some have been bestsellers for their publishing houses. Some have gone out of print even before I received my author’s copies in the mail. :o) You can learn more about my books at my site: http://nancysbookzone.wordpress.com/

Q: What was your favorite book as a teen?

Jane Eyre

Douglass cover medium

Q: What is the one author, living or dead, who you would like to co-write a book with someday, and why?

I’d love to co-write a book with Charlotte Brontë, the author of Jane Eyre. That’s because Charlotte had fun when she wrote, and I love to have fun, too! Charlotte and her sisters Emily and Anne loved to jot down notes on tiny scraps of paper. Their brother, Branwell, called this habit of theirs scribblemania. They even made miniature books and tiny magazines that are collector’s items today!

They’d also spend the evenings together reading their manuscripts aloud to each other, giving each other encouragement and feedback. Then they’d discuss ideas they had for the upcoming scenes in their novels. Plus, they’d spend time sitting together, each one writing their own manuscripts during the quiet evenings at their home in Yorkshire on the wind-swept moor.

I just think this whole writing process would be so much fun to do together with Charlotte!

Q: What do you want readers to take away from your articles and books?

I write for one purpose only. For my readers to meet Jesus, fall in love with Him, and want to spend every day with Him as their Lord and Savior here on earth and then in eternity.

Some articles and books I write to draw in the person who is totally lost and does not know Jesus at all. Other articles and books I write to draw in people who are searching so that they can find Jesus, the answer to all their questions. Other articles and books I write to draw in people who are Christians, but have either fallen away or don’t yet know what it’s like to live the abundant life and spend quality time with Jesus every day. And other articles and books I write to encourage Christians to run the race and fight the good fight by having a relationship so intimate with Jesus that it influences their entire identity. As a children’s writer, I’m always writing with kids in mind, but I’m also writing for their parents, teachers, and people of influence in their lives. Because those are the people who share my books with them.

with my writing buddies Sandman (orange) and Pitterpat (Siamese)Q: In what ways does your faith impact how you approach writing?

Faith drives every word I write. I don’t want to write anything that is on my own. I only want to write with God’s purpose and God’s intention and God’s heart. Even the books and articles that I write for the general market are written out of a purpose and a calling to write according to my marching orders from God.

That’s why I like to meet with God every day. I want to hear directly from Him regarding the writing I do. To learn more about how you can do this, too, visit my site One Hour Each Day at http://onehoureachday.wordpress.com/

You see, Jesus talked about writing very clearly in Matthew 23. The NKJV is especially insightful. Time after time, he said, “Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” He repeated this phrase 6 times!

But then Jesus declares in Matthew 23:34, “Therefore indeed, I sent you wise men, prophets, and scribes.”

Obviously, according to Jesus, there are two different kinds of scribes. And if Jesus is sending forth one group of scribes, this implies that these scribes are people who hang out with Jesus. How else can He send them out?

So I want to be a scribe who hangs out with Jesus. Every day. I want to sit at His feet and listen to His words. I want to hear what’s on His heart for today and grasp the message He wants to send out for such a time as this.

And then I want to sit down and write and send His message to the world.

How does this translate to practical experience? I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve sat at Jesus’ feet reading the Bible and journaling my prayers to Him, and He’s given me an idea totally out of the blue for a potential writing project. And then when I contact an editor or publisher with that idea, they jump on it and offer me a contract. For instance, one time while I was meeting with Jesus, He gave me the idea for a new book. I called an editor I work with at a top publishing house in the general market and told her my idea. She said, “I just had a dream about that very idea last night! Yes! I want you to write that book!!!” Things like that have happened time and time again over my writing career.

Q: What can you tell us about your most recent books?HPIM3755

Three of my recently published books this past year include:

Frederick Douglass for Kids: His Life and Times With 21 Activities

Challenge on the Hill of Fire

Yes! You Can Learn How to Write Beginning Readers and Chapter Books

Frederick Douglass for Kids is one of the most awesome journeys I’ve ever taken as a writer! For starters, my husband Jeff and I got to take a two-week photo-research tour where we basically walked in Douglass’s footsteps from his birthplace to the place he was living when he died. Many of the photographs we took are in this book, making this book like no other book written about Frederick Douglass. Plus, Douglass is now my new American hero. What an amazing person he was! And his faith in God compelled him to do the things he did. He talks frankly about his faith in his autobiographies, so I was able to highlight this in my book about him, too. It’s the 2012 Silver NAPPA (National Parenting Publications) winner. You can visit its site for free teacher and parent materials at http://frederickdouglass.wordpress.com/

In Challenge on the Hill of Fire, I got to take young readers on an exciting adventure to meet Patrick, who single-handedly followed God’s call to spread the Gospel in Ireland. How cool is that? Now only can kids read about this awesome man of faith, but my prayer is that they’ll be inspired to follow Patrick’s example and make a difference in their world for Jesus.

I decided to self-publish a second book in my Yes! You Can series of how-to books for children’s writers. I’ve written over 400 beginning reader stories that have been published over the years in a variety of venues, including the bestseller for Scholastic, 25 Read and Write Mini-Books That Teach Word Families. Yet every time I was struggling as a writer to write for the beginning reader market, I couldn’t find any how-to books to help me. So I decided to publish a book on my own to help other authors experience success in this market, too. You can read more about my book and how to purchase Yes! You Can Learn How to Write Beginning Readers and Chapter Books at my site, http://yesyoucanlearn.wordpress.com/

Q: Coke or Pepsi?

I don’t like pop, so I’ve never had either. I much prefer coconut water, carrot juice, a fruit smoothie, or a refreshing bottle of spring water!

Q: Soft shell or Hard Shell tacos?

Taco salads, yummy!

Q: Favorite writing buddies?

My two cats, Sandman and Pitterpat. Lots of times when I sit down on the couch with my laptop for a writing session, I prop my feet up on the recliner, Pitterpat curls up at my feet, and Sandman snuggles up under my arm. They love to help me write. In fact, they even have their own website with all their favorite writing tips, Writing According to Humphrey and Friends! Check it out at http://writingaccordingtohumphrey.wordpress.com/

Q: Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

Every day I have a brand new favorite Bible verse!!!! My husband, Jeff, and I love to read the One Year Bible. We’ve been reading it for over 10 years now, I think. Yes cover front, jpgIn fact, now our whole church is reading it. Every day I have some new issue that I’m dealing with, and when I go read God’s daily dose of His Word, He always gives me the perfect verse to comfort me, encourage me, and anchor my hope upon. So today, my favorite Bible verse is…drumroll please…

Let the saints be joyful in glory;

Let them sing aloud on their beds.

Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,

And a two-edged sword in their hand,

To execute vengeance on the nations,

And punishments on the peoples’

To bind their kings with chains,

And their nobles with fetters of iron;

To execute on them the written judgment—

This honor have all His saints.

Praise the Lord!

-Psalm 149:5-7, NJKV

How’s that for a verse for us as writers?!!!

Q: Favorite pasta dish?

Eggplant Parmesan with whole wheat pasta and marinara sauce at Olive Garden. With their awesome garden salad, of course. All this favorite food stuff is making me hungry!

Q: Do you listen to music while you write? If so what are some examples?

Sometimes I like to choose a song or CD that’s my theme song for a particular book project I’m working on. Other times I like to write when it’s quiet so I can concentrate better.

Most writing days during my lunch break, I put on a worship CD and spend some time just worshipping God and thanking Him for His goodness. Often I’ll play worship CDs when I’m doing writing related tasks such as researching images or creating my bibliography or posting on my blog. All my worship CDs are on my iPod, so I love to listen to them all. Examples include Mercy Me, Hillsongs, Marty Goetz, and the Praise Songs. And when I get good news such as an offer for a book contract or an awesome book review, I always put on “Shouts of Joy,” from Paul Wilbur’s CD, The Watchman, and spend time with God giving him some shouts of joy!

You can listen to “Shouts of Joy” at this link:

Risk, Book Discussion, by Ryan Matlock

Hey all! This is Ryan Matlock. Just to set your mind at ease, so you know I am not some crazy hacker, I have been asked by Brock to do a book discussion for his book, Risk. Every day, I will post my thoughts and a review of one chapter from his book. This post isn’t one of the reviews though. This post is to let you know a little about me, and how I met Brock. But tomorrow I will post the first chapter review.

I met Brock about a year and a half ago, at one of his book signings. I mentioned to him my ambitions to write for Adventures in Odyssey when I grow up, and then a few months later, I Facebook messaged him, saying that I was reading his book, HowlSage. He asked if I would like to do a book discussion about it (like this one), and I agreed. After I finished that book discussion, he asked me to review his other book, Taken. And here we are, about 1 year later, and now that his book Risk is out, I am doing a book review for it!

A little about myself, I am 15 and I have 3 younger siblings. I love to write (obviously), and I am a huge fan of the radio drama produced by Focus on the Family, Adventures in Odyssey. I even  have my own podcast devoted to AIO called the World Famous Odyssey Podcast! I also really like to play music, especially on piano, guitar, or ukulele. I really like speech and debate, and I love hanging out with friends and family.

I am really excited to start this book discussion! Please feel free to leave comments in my posts about what you thought about the chapter, or just the book over all.

Until Tomorrow (the first day of the book discussion!) ~Ryan M.

Zach Callison Interview

Zach Callison plays Matthew Parker in the popular Adventures in Odyssey series! At the recent Get in the Show finals, we were able to ask him a couple questions…

Q: Everyone seems to have a “how I got discovered” story. What is yours?

I still feel like I am yet to be “discovered”.  I have been performing and acting since the age of seven.  A family friend heard me sing when I was five or six and told my parents that I had a gift.  She was a professional singer/song writer and so my mom began to search for a vocal coach when I turned seven.  She found one at a local college but the coach didn’t hold recitals for her students.  My mom wanted me to have some stage/audience experience and had noticed that the college was getting ready to hold auditions for a musical (The Music Man) and needed kids.  The age on auditions was for 8 and up and I was only seven.  After gaining encouragement from the vocal coach even though I was ‘under-aged’, I auditioned and got the leading ‘kid’ role in the show.  Winthrop!  The character has a lisp and it was fun to do.  It is the only time I could spit and not get in trouble!

Q: When did you realize you wanted to become an actor?

After performing in The Music Man, I went on to do several more plays and even performed on the famous St. Louis MUNY stage for two seasons.  My parents thought that maybe I could stretch my acting wings and I landed an agent in St. Louis.  There is not a whole lot of work in St. Louis for kids, but I was lucky enough to book a local commercial and a SAG independent film.  It was after doing the film that I found my true passion.  I knew then that TV and Film was what I wanted to do more of.  It was shortly after that that we began the process of moving to LA.

Q: Tell me a little about what you do?

I thought when I got to LA that I would be doing just on-camera acting. I have worked on shows like Hannah Montana, I’m in the Band, Little Brother and as well as films.  I didn’t know anything about voice over.  While I have had success in working on camera jobs, I have truly excelled in the voice over world.  I have worked for not just Adventures in Odyssey but for Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros, Disney and more.  I have had the good fortune to have played Matthew Parker for a little over three years now and it was my first voice over job!  I also am doing a regular role in Disney’s new show for their Disney Jr. network titled ‘Sofia the First’.  It is a fun role also and I get to sing for it. In addition to acting I am working hard at my music.  I am in a rock band ‘Delirium’ and we are working on developing originals and just making the best music we can.  Our emphasis is on quality and I love working with others who think the same way as I do about that.

Q: What’s a normal day like for you?

A normal day consists of school work first even if I am working a job.  The production is required to make sure kids have time for their school work and I have never been on a set that didn’t put that as top priority.  If not working I may have a vocal or piano lesson, an acting class or coaching session, one to two auditions during the busy times.  I attend 1-3 events a week, usually supporting a charity.  I love video games so I try to play when I can.  I will also when I can skype with friends while we are playing our games.  I also like to Freeline skate with friends or by myself.  I am getting better at it, so of course I like to do it more and more!

Q: What is the coolest project you have worked on?

Adventures in Odyssey had been so fun for me. I have made awesome friends and the work doesn’t feel like work.  For on camera projects, I’d have to say ‘I’m in the Band’.  I played a LARPer (Live Action Role Play) and we dressed in medieval clothes and fought with foam swords.  It was a blast!

Q: Where is the farthest you have traveled for a job?

Dallas, TX for the AIO show.  I moved from St. Louis, MO to Los Angeles, CA to pursue my career, but this is my first acting job that I had to travel for.

Q: What is your favorite book?

The Hunger Games series.

Q: What is the one person, living or dead, who you would like to meet or have met?

Captain Paul Watson.  I was recently named a youth ambassador for Sea Shepherd.  I really respect his commitment to saving our oceans for future generations.

Q: Describe your feelings when you heard or saw your first performance?

Ugh!  I hate to watch myself!  I always critic myself and think about how I could have done it better.

Q: What are your hopes for your future as an actor?

I’d love to be known as a versatile actor in feature films for both on-camera and voice over.

Q: What inspired you to act?

I think I may have been born to act.  I have always used my imagination to create characters and do ‘scenes’ while playing as a small child.  One year my mom made me a Luke Skywalker costume for Halloween and I would put it on every day and pretend I was saving the universe in my backyard. The ‘Force’ was always with me!

Q: Have you ever turned down a role, because it ended up not fitting your personality?

Absolutely.  My parents and I have turned things down because the content was not something they or I felt I should do.  It went against my moral code.  I believe that even while I am portraying another person, I still have to be true to myself and my beliefs.

Q: Most embarrassing moment acting?

It wasn’t during a performance, but during wardrobe check for The Music Man for the director. My pants fell down, right there on stage.  The wardrobe crew hadn’t done alterations yet.  I was only seven and small and the pants were for a man.  Fortunately I was wearing the band uniform jacket and it was long enough to give me coverage! lol

Q: What can you tell us about any future projects you have planned?

Sofia the First is an ongoing job and the movie aired last night with the series beginning in 2013. (You can watch it by clicking on the banner below.) I also hope to continue working with Adventures in Odyssey.  I just did the most amazing episode written by Paul McCusker and I can’t wait for the fan response to it.  All I can say is that it involves the imagination station and early Christian life.

Q: Coke or Pepsi?

I have never had either.  My parents have never wanted me to have caffeine.  I do love Zevia.  It has no sugar or calories and is sweetened with a natural sweetener called stevia.

Q: Soft shell or Hard Shell tacos?

Both!

Q: Favorite place to vacation?

So far it has been Sydney, Australia.  I went there on a People to People Student Ambassador trip three years ago.  It was amazing. This year I am going to Switzerland for summer school in order study Italian.  You might have to ask this question again when I return!

Q: Favorite season?

Winter

Q: Favorite color?

Black

Q: What’s your favorite holiday memory?

I love all my Christmas holidays.  I get to go home for about 2-3 weeks each year to see family and friends and enjoy spending the Christmas celebration with them.  I also enjoy the winter weather while at home and on occasion I have been lucky enough for it to snow while I’m there.

Q: Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

Not a verse in particular, but I always enjoy reading the book of Proverbs.  It contains so many good bits of wisdom to fit any situation.

Q: Favorite pasta dish?

Vegetable penne pasta.

Q: What music do you listen to?

My favorite band is Muse.  I like alt rock, indie rock, electronica and dub step among many others.

Q: I hear you are in a band, tell me about it? Anywhere we can go and listen to some of the music or download it?

‘Delirium’ is a very new band.  My friend Hunter Craig (bass) and I came from another band and formed this one to pursue the quality of sound that we both believe in.  We are definitely rock n roll.  We hoped to record the original soon and get it on iTunes.  Our first song is definitely influenced by Muse.

Q: What is it like working with other actors, any one in particular you really enjoyd working with?

Jess Harnell has to be one of my favorites.  He is so good at what he does and a super human being as well!   I also really enjoyed working with Jeff Foxworthy on ‘Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader’.  He is so funny and fun to be around.  Both of these guys are kind and positive and make the working environment more enjoyable.

Q: You recently did a video to support the release of CPT. Paul Watson. Can you tell me what about his cause inspires you? How can other young men and women stand up for what they believe?

I think the cause is just and he protects our oceans and the intelligent species that live within them.  I feel strongly about this cause because protecting our oceans ultimately is protecting ourselves.  God expects us to be good stewards of this earth and I think Captain Paul is doing just that.  I would tell other youth to be confident, stand up for yourself when the need arises and spread the word about your cause. Don’t back down if you are outnumbered. Stay true to yourself and your beliefs.

Q: What’s it like working in Hollywood?

It’s not the image that is portrayed by the media as glamour and glitz.  Working in Hollywood is probably no different than working anywhere else.  It is hard work, and even though I’m a kid I am expected to be as professional as any adult on set.  The difference is probably that my work brings me a lot of joy because it is something I love to do.

Q: I noticed that you have lots events you attend via your Facebook pictures. How do you balance work, school, life, and play?

School definitely comes first. I just finished the year in a CA Charter homeschool program and received my report card today and have a 4.0 GPA.  My parents require that I maintain my grades in order to do all the other stuff I do. It may seem to outsiders that I go non-stop, and yes I am busy, but I also have down time.  Sometimes I have to give up free time to work on an audition or band practice (which is fun for me), but it pays off when I am rewarded with an acting job or asked to perform out live.  My acting career has afforded me so many amazing experiences that the sacrifices don’t seem like sacrifices at all.

29 Years

I turned 29 today. It’s hard not to look back and think… WOW.

WOW God has been so amazing to me. He has given me a lot of awesome opportunities, and many man wonderful people in my life.

I’m thankful of course for my dad, mom, and sister. For my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins. For all the extended family I had growing up. I was always surrounded by people who loved and encouraged me. People who guided me and placed God first in their lives.

God gave me a wonderful woman of Him and blessed me with two amazing children, who inspire me everyday. He has brought our little family to Colorado. He has given us a house and taken care of our every need. When I look at my wife and two girls, I can’t help but smile and feel joy rushing into my heart. This is what living is about. Being a husband, being a daddy…well those two titles are what give me the greatest happiness. With each smile, hug, kiss, or “I Love You,” it’s like receiving treasure. What could be more valuable?

He’s let me try my hand at owning an ice cream shop, running an online airsoft business. He got me through college, gave me a great internship. He sent me into marketing, He gave me my wife who strengthened me to take a job in Colorado. Before that He gave me the inspiration to write, though I had no skills in such a task and had no idea he’d use it 5 years later. He brought me to Focus and gave me a great job working with a brand I myself grew up on. And He gave me opportunities to get published. He surrounded me by amazing people who have taught me so much. And now at 29 He continues to amaze me with his continued outpouring of blessings.

I look back and see all the things He was doing, though I didn’t have the eyes to see them then. He weaved together a pattern to create who I am today. Though of course I know He isn’t done yet and for that I am thankful. One thing is for sure; when He is in control of our plan we have nothing to fear. When we let go He will take us to places we couldn’t have imagined were possible.

So at 29, what is the most significant thing I have learned?

Listen for and Trust God, He will surely guide your path. And that path leads to the greatest blessings.

So a birthday yes, but more than that a celebration and glimpse to what our Creator has done.
